Welcoming a New Year in Prague

30 December 2014

We arrived at Prague Airport via Easyjet flight from Amsterdam. It was -5C at 9pm. We took the train and bus to our accommodation,  Hostel Florenc. It was quite a walk going there, pulling our luggages through the snow. I'm not complaining...snow is what we came here for!  This is a budget hotel with friendly reception staff, squeaky clean and spacious rooms, good breakfast buffet selection although a bit unglamorous since it's located within the compound of the main central bus station. But overall we were satisfied with our stay, except that the room had no TV, but it had internet service anyway.

After a satisfying late breakfast at the hostel, we visited several attractions near the Florenc area. Temperature was still in negative but had to savor this snowy winter vacay!

Strolling around felt like being inside a postcard and traveling back to the medieval period.

But because of too much cold and snow, we ended our sightseeing for the day at Charles' Bridge and snacked at the Old Town Square. There were only cocktail tables set for sharing among costumers and I was uncomfortable to take a photo of the sausages that we ate.

Unfortunately, too, we were not able to go out at midnight to witness how locals welcome the new  ear because I was so sleepy! Such a loser! Although I remember opening my eyes from time to time and recall seeing hubby, who looked like a little boy locked up in a basement, watching distant fireworks display from our room's small window.

To make up for the forgotten celebration of the new year's eve, we searched for a nice restaurant for lunch. We checked out Prague 3 area which is close to our hostel but to our dismay, since it was a holiday, most of the restaurants were closed! The only restaurant open was Restaurace Poja along Seifertova road. It was a humble celebration of the new year but we actually loved what we ordered here, especially the Česnečka, garlic soup with potato and ham, and apparently the number one hangover soup among Czechs.

Temperature was not negative as the other two days so we walked around Prague 3 area then climbed up the Vitkov Hill. It's such a relaxing place, with a view of the city below. On top, there's the Vitkov's monument and going down, there's the Military museum which was closed, leaving my husband only a war tank for photo background.

That night we walked to Stefanik Bridge along with locals (since we expected it to be super crowded at Charles Bridge) to watch the fireworks display organized by the city government.  It wasn't as crowded for us to get a good space and view.  I was expecting the crowd to be noisy during the fireworks show but the locals were so quiet, like an audience watching an opera!

Going back to the hostel, we passed by the Jewish Quarter which looked so magical under the moonlight...

What better way to end the day but with a midnight snack from McDonald's, including  one of the must-try Czech foods, Smažený Sýr (deep fried cheese).

For our last tour day, we completed the most important agenda -- to visit the place where Bohemian royalties were crowned and laid to rest -- the Prague Castle complex across the Vltava river.  At 2C, we walked and climbed more or less a distance of 4km (one way) from our place, but seeing the old architectures, it was definitely worth it!

The St. Vitus Cathedral where Bohemian Kings were crowned and buried:
More around the complex...
On the way down...

we were welcomed by swans near at Vltava river.

That 4-hour walk was definitely tiring so we treated ourselves at Malostranska Pivnice with another must-try Czech foods, koleno and guláš.
Since it was our last night in the city, we hanged out for a while to adore the architectures...
The Old Town Square at night...
We ended our day with this delish midnight snack of trdelník, a rolled pastry with sugar and cinnamon...so christmassy!

Today, we ended our time travel vacation and took a flight to another old city...an ancient one in fact...Athens!
